A Multifaceted Experience

Fog Design + Art offers fresh programming and contemporary art for its 11th edition.

Bringing together a wide-ranging mix of art and design, the San Francisco-based art fair, Fog Design + Art,promises another exciting edition this January. Not only is the 2025 fair featuring 59 exhibitors, but collectors and enthusiasts can expect special programming that includes emerging artists, installations, discussions, the FOG Preview Gala and a brand-new experience that offers affordable design items.

Attendees enjoy a variety of artworks at the 2024 art fair.

“The mission of FOG Design + Art is multifaceted,” explains the new fair director, Sydney Blumenkranz. “The goals of the fair are to bring world class art and design to the San Francisco Bay Area, and to create a moment of civic pride to showcase the local art and design community. FOG brings together…outstanding contemporary artworks by some of the most exciting and prominent artists working today, as well as truly unique design pieces that make the fair feel both inviting and fun. We almost always have a really wonderful selection of modern and more historic works on view as well, which complement the contemporary feel of the fair.”

Exhibiting for the first time, are galleries like Southern Guild (Los Angeles), Charles Moffett Gallery (New York), Chris Sharp Gallery (Los Angeles), House of Seiko (San Francisco), Municipal Bonds (San Francisco), and Superhouse (New York), among others. Other highlights include Andrew Kreps Gallery (New York), Hauser & Wirth (Los Angeles), Sarah Myerscough Gallery (London), SIDE GALLERY (Barcelona), and  so much more.

Returning for a second year is FOG FOCUS, “following the success of last year’s inaugural experience,” notes Blumenkranz. “This additional pier features up-and-coming artists, as well as artists who are underrecognized. It’s a great venue for emerging collectors and art enthusiasts alike, and is a wonderful addition to the fair.”

Fair attendees will also be able to listen in on FOG Talks, insightful discussions on topics like the fields of art, design, technology within the context of the contemporary world. A few highlights for Blumenkranz include a program about how the arts can lead the way in the revitalization of San Francisco; as well as a conversation between Carrie Mae Weems and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s (SFMOMA) Director Christopher Bedford.

Debuting this year is FOG MRKT. Stationed at the fair’s entryway, the section of the fair showcases “design-focused purveyors selling goods at a more affordable level,” Blumenkranz says. The new program is a curated installation of artisanal products and crafts with an emphasis on the Bay Area.

Kicking off all the festivities, on January 22 from 4 to 10 p.m., is the FOG Preview Gala that brings together the art and design community in a unique way, while fundraising for the SFMOMA educational programs. “It’s a sold-out event every year, and highlight of the Bay Area’s art calendar,” shares Blumenkranz. This ticketed event provides guests with culinary creations and design-centric cocktails, as well as exclusive, early access to the fair’s design objects, furniture and fine art before it opens to the public.

Fog Design + Art is open to the public January 23 through 26 at the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture, with exhibitors and programming spread out between two piers. Additional information, along with ticket prices, is available on the art fair website. —
